What are cookies?

Cookies are small pieces of text that are sent by the websites visited by the user to the user’s Internet browser. The browser then automatically stores the cookies on the user’s computer or portable device, and automatically sends them back to the server whenever the user visits the website again. In other words, they are those cookies which are sent from a different website and not from the website one is currently visiting.

Thus, cookies are used to realize computer authentications , for monitoring sessions and recording information related to the activity of users which access a website and may also contain a unique identifying code which permits to keep track of the user’s movements within the same website, for statistical or advertising purposes.

There are operations which would be impossible to realize without cookies, which in some cases are technically necessary for the very functioning of the website.
